Having an Issue?

Dell Pro 14 Keyboard Backlight Not Working? Here’s Why

Symptom: No keyboard backlight present

You sit down to work, the lights are low, and you notice your keyboard backlight is completely dead. No glow, no response, nothing. If you're on a Dell Pro 14, this is actually a problem we see come through our doors fairly regularly. The good news is that it isn't always a hardware failure. The bad news is that sometimes it is, and you'll want to know the difference before you spend time troubleshooting.

What This Symptom Usually Means

The keyboard backlight on the Dell Pro 14 can go dark for a few different reasons. The most common ones fall into two categories: software or settings issues, and actual hardware faults.

On the software side, the backlight timeout setting is the usual culprit. Dell laptops are configured by default to turn the backlight off after a short period of inactivity to save power. A recent Windows update or a change in your power plan settings can also reset backlight behavior without you touching anything.

On the hardware side, the problem is usually one of three things: a loose or damaged ribbon cable connecting the keyboard to the motherboard, a faulty backlight circuit within the keyboard assembly itself, or, less commonly, a motherboard-level issue affecting the power supplied to the keyboard.

Things You Can Check At Home First

Before assuming the worst, run through these steps:

  • Try the keyboard shortcut. On most Dell laptops, Fn + F10 (or F6 on some layouts) toggles the backlight. Press it a few times and see if anything changes.
  • Check your power settings. Open Windows Settings, go to System, then Power and Sleep. Some power-saving modes suppress the backlight even when the shortcut is active.
  • Update or reinstall your keyboard driver. Open Device Manager, find your keyboard under "Keyboards," right-click, and choose "Update driver." A corrupted driver can cut off backlight control entirely.
  • Check Dell's own software. If you have Dell Power Manager or Dell Command Center installed, the backlight settings can be managed there. It's worth opening it and confirming the backlight isn't simply disabled at the application level.
  • Do a full restart. Not sleep, not hibernate. A complete shutdown and cold boot. This clears temporary software states that can lock out backlight control.
